living and thriving on purpose - 2002We come to the closing of the first summer of a new millennium! This midpoint in the year is a time for us to reflect on our accomplishments, experiences and insights; most of all, it is an opportunity to think about what we want for our work life and personal life in the future. We have a blank canvas in front of us. What will we paint on it? Our possibilities are truly endless and each of us has the incredible human capacity to create the future we want to live into. This time of reflection often stimulates thought-provoking questions within us, questions that we often don’t consider until we take time out to reflect on what we want. As we begin to look at the rest of this year, I invite you to consider several deeper questions that bring meaning and purpose to life. Questions such as… Who am I? What is my purpose? What makes me truly happy? Just as businesses have a purpose or mission, we, as human beings also have a purpose or mission in life. A mission or purpose rarely changes. It inspires change. A mission, in essence, is not a goal to be fulfilled. Rather, it is a reason for existence that guides the decisions we make and directions we take. Hewlett-Packard’s purpose, for example, is “To make technical contributions for the advancement and welfare of humanity”. 3M’s purpose is “to solve unsolved problems innovatively”. Walt Disney’s purpose is “To make people happy”. We spend time in our work creating mission statements, but how often do we stop and think about our own mission statement or purpose in life? Life purpose is a statement that reflects who we are for the world. It is discovered, not created. It has always existed and we probably have lived our life by it in many instances without consciously realizing it. Discovering our life purpose is like peeling all the layers away from the onion to find its core, what is at its heart, its essence, what has always been there from the start. I write to you to invite you to stop, take some time out of your busy schedules and consider these deeper questions related to Purpose – your purpose. For when we stay with an inquiry into deeper questions, life shifts in amazing and remarkable ways. Things we never saw before become visible. Remember when you learned how to ride a bike? You may have rode with training wheels or had assistance alongside you. You kept practicing and practicing and then, BANG! One day you got balance! Once we experience balance, we always have it. Even if we don’t ride a bicycle after 20 years, we could get right back on and have balance. As soon as we put our focus and energy into “practicing” or “inquiring into” these deeper questions, we begin to discover meaning and fulfillment in our lives, just as we discovered balance when riding a bike. We not only begin to understand our purpose in life, but draw on that purpose to guide us in decisions and create a future we want to live into. How do we begin the process of discovering our life purpose? The first step is to take some time out to begin to answer some simple yet profound questions. (Remember, there are no “right” answers) These are the questions I offer you:
As you capture your answers, notice what aspects of your life these questions impact. What doors open, what possibilities exist. And, this is just one exercise to assist you in discovering life purpose. There are more. ThinkPeople is proud to offer a service called Coaching!
