Break Free from the Past
The beginning of a new year can be very inspiring. It’s an opportunity to start fresh with a clean slate, follow your dreams and desires and create what you’ve always wanted in your life. As we imagine ourselves in this fresh new place, ideas may come flowing in and we get excited for what’s possible. And then…reality sinks in. We remember what didn’t work in the past, we recall our ideas getting shot down by those we thought cared for us and we get discouraged from past events and incidents. We let our past get in the way and then instantly, our exciting ideas become “too much work”, “not possible” or simply “crazy” ideas.

It’s amazing how our thoughts and mind can turn in a moment. And, for some of us, those thoughts can grow bigger each minute and take over our mood, energy level and aliveness. If our mind can do that in an instant, then what’s to say we couldn’t change it back to that more positive, empowering state in the next instant? It may be easier said than done, but definitely possible.

As you move into this New Year, I ask you to consider one powerful question. This question will help you break free from your past so that it is not sitting in the middle of your future. So here is the question…What do you no longer want to bring into this New Year? Really consider this question and for each answer, come up with an action plan to resolve it. For example, you may no longer want to be treated a certain way by others, perhaps a relationship is not working, you would like to change roles in your job, your home is disorganized, your office a mess. Whatever it may be, take a hard look at what you no longer want to take into this New Year. Begin to clear it out, clean it up, resolve, forgive or let go.

This is the year to have everything you desire. You deserve the very best and you have everything within you to make that happen. I wish you all the best in 2009!

Happy New Year!

Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna

Monthly Workout: Break Free from the Past
Take on the following questions and process below for this month’s workout:
  1. Find a quiet place and sit undisturbed. Bring along a journal or something to write on.
  2. Now, take some time to dwell on the question, “What do I no longer want to bring into this New Year?” As thoughts come up, jot your answers down. Do not judge, assess or analyze your answers. Keep writing until you have exhausted your answers.
  3. Go back to your answers and circle the top three that most drain your energy, level of aliveness and freedom in your life.
  4. Take the first item and brainstorm on specific actions you could take to resolve it, clear it out, clean it up, forgive yourself or others or identify what you may need to let go of.
  5. Make a commitment to take on the actions one at a time. Seek support from a friend, co-worker, family member or coach. Be sure you are surrounded by people who are committed to your growth and development.
  6. For each action you accomplish, CELEBRATE! In could be in a small or big way, but be sure to take the time out to acknowledge how far you have come.
  7. Repeat steps # 4 - # 6 for the other two answers. Be gentle with yourself as you break free from the past and create more freedom in your life.
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)

Break Free from the Past

It’s not always easy to break free,
from the things or people we once cared for.
It’s not always easy to see,
the future of possibility and ability to soar.

When we open our eyes and mind,
to the magnificence of who we are.
And we don’t settle for anything but the best,
we will take action to break free and the universe will take care of the rest.
