Overcoming Overwhelm
Do you ever have one of those days when things just get so out of hand you want to throw your arms up and say “Calgon, take me a away!!” Is this more often than not? Living in such a fast paced, electronically driven, instant message oriented world, it’s no surprise we get overwhelmed. Not only do we have our work and personal commitments, but on top of that, other requests and demands get thrown at us and suddenly, we find ourselves in reaction mode…all the time!
Imagine, a day that starts out nice and easy sitting at your kitchen table with a fresh hot cup of coffee or tea reading the newspaper. You pleasantly engage with your significant other, or kids, or cat or dog and then get ready for work and leave calmly. You get in your car and enjoy some soft jazz while driving to work. You arrive at work with plenty of time to get organized, situated and start the day on a great note. So, does this sound like a crock of bull? YES? And, NO!
In all of this, there is one common denominator – YOU. And, the reality is that you are the only one who can control how you respond, react to and realize things in your life. So, what does this have to do with overcoming overwhelm? You have the power to shift how your day goes so that overwhelm is an exception and not the rule. How do you do it? First step is to get really clear on how you want your day to go. So often, we make assumptions about how our day will go because of what we experienced in the past. This is about shifting your thoughts today to create the future you want tomorrow.
Once you are clear on what you want, imagine it to be true. No different than you might dream about driving that new BMW or watching TV on your new Plasma or wearing that gorgeous diamond necklace you’ve wanted. Picture or visualize yourself going through your day exactly as you want it. Do this for 30 seconds and notice how you feel.
What you are actually doing is training your mind and body to believe you have already accomplished it. Before the race, successful athletes visualize themselves crossing the finish line FIRST, not second or third. Just as the basketball player sees the ball go through the basket before he even shoots. Why do they do this? To train their brain and muscles to feel what it’s like to excel so when they are at the starting line or ready to shoot, their body already knows what to do.
You too, can create the day that you want by visualizing it, locking it in and believing it is possible. Like any muscle that you are building, this takes rigor and practice on a consistent basis. I invite you to try it out and see how your days change over time! May you overcome overwhelm and create everyday the way you envision it. You do have the power!
Cheers,

Monthly Workout: Overcoming Overwhelm
Take on the following questions and process below for this month’s workout:
- After you wake up in the morning, take a few minutes to jot down what you are up to during the day. Then, begin to write down how you would like it to be. Write statements in the present tense as if they have already happened (e.g. I meet with my Boss and our conversation about my next project goes really well. I get assigned to the next phase with additional responsibility and autonomy. My questions get answered and I am happy with the outcome)
- Now, take a minute or 2 and visualize your day the way you just described. Picture in your mind going through the day, or event or meeting and how you want it to be. Engage all of your senses in this so that you feel what it’s like to have this day in your bones.
- Now, lock that image in and remind yourself that you have the ability to create your day the way you want. Take a moment to believe it is possible.
- Go about your day and begin to notice what you experience. How do you feel? How is your day different? If it is different, what do you think you did to make it different? If it’s the same as every other day, look back to see if you truly believed it could be different. Begin to challenge your belief because if you have any doubt this will not work, it won’t!
- Continue to try this out everyday, or before a meeting, or phone call and capture what you are learning. Apply the new learning the following day and begin to see shifts in what you have the ability to attract.
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)
Poem of the Month: Overcoming Overwhelm
Too much to do, so little time.
When will it all end, beyond my prime?
It’s hard to believe, we have the power,
To shift our thoughts, and soon encounter,
A different outcome to our repetitive day,
A different feeling, a different way.
It takes some rigor, and consistent action,
To see the change and get some traction.
When you imagine and believe it is true,
Then the possibilities are endless for you!
