Greetings! February 2004

Do you ever notice the more you let go of, the younger you feel? Seems as kids, the goal was always to acquire things. Gain more knowledge, learn more "stuff", accumulate! As adults, it seems as though the more we "peel away" and let go, the more fulfilled we become. This month's workout explores the pictures we create in our mind about how life is supposed to look and how to let go of the picture so that our true vision can shine through!

ThinkPeople is offering a new workshop in March called What do I want to be when I grow up? If it's a question you often ponder, I invite you to check out the details below.

Stay True to Your Vision. Let Go of the Picture!
Have you ever looked back and found yourself saying "That's not what I pictured myself doing" or, "He/She is not who I pictured myself with". It is natural to have a picture of what life is supposed to be like. What our job would look like, how much money we would make, where we would live, how many kids we would have. We are raised with so many strong stereotypes of how things are supposed to look that it is often difficult to know what we really want, what our true vision is.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Fireman, Nurse, Doctor, Dentist? Sound familiar? Do you ever remember answering, "VP of Operations...Management Consultant..Head of HR"?. As young children, we painted a picture of how our life would look. My picture was: I would graduate from high school and go to college, meet my sweetheart in college, graduate from college and get married. Buy a house, have 2 kids and live happily ever after! Isn't that how it was supposed to be?

This may all sound cliché and very stereotypical, but the reality is, we may still be holding onto some of these pictures today without even realizing how strong our hold is. We focus so much on the "picture" that we lose site of our ultimate vision - what we really want based on who we are today and what is important to us. We can get so attached to how something is supposed to look that we lose site of the fact that it could be right be in front of us all along! How often have you wanted something and searched near and far only to find out it was right in front of you all along. It just didn't look the way you expected it to.

What pictures are you attached to in your life? Do you have a certain image of how your body should look? How your partner should look? The job you should have? Having the picture is a great place to start. But, the real key is finding the qualities of that picture that are important to you. What are the qualities of that ideal job you want? What are the qualities of a great relationship you want to have? What are the qualities of the home you want to move into? When we focus on qualities, we really get to the essence of what is important. Our vision can show up in many different ways, but if we are too attached to one specific way, we limit ourselves from experiencing all that is available to us.

Begin to distinguish the qualities of your picture, the essence of what is important to you and stay open to those qualities showing up in your life. Stay true to your vision and let go of the picture. You may be pleasantly surprised and joyously thrilled in the end. After all, what is life without surprises?

May you stay true to your vision!

Monthly Workout: Stay true to your vision. Let go of the Picture
Take on the following questions for this month's workout:
  1. Pick one area of your life and think about the vision for that area, what you truly want in that area. Areas might include: health, relationship, family, career, home, fun, money.
  2. Paint a picture of how you would like that area to look.
  3. On a scale of 1-10, how attached do you feel to that picture? Notice what part of the picture you may be more strongly attached to.
  4. What is so important about the picture you just painted? What are the qualities or essence of the picture? (e.g. In the area of career, qualities might include: Mentorship, Teamwork, Flexibility, Autonomy, Helping People, Recognition, Financially Stable)
  5. Are you willing to hold onto your vision and qualities of what you want and let go of how the picture will ultimately unfold?
  6. If not, what would it take to let go? Hang out in this place for a while and see what you notice.
  7. If so, what is a structure you could put in place to help you stay true to your vision? Set up that structure and notice any changes in yourself and your life.
I look forward to hearing what transpires for you! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)

Poem of the Month: GET GO OF THE PICTURE

Life is unpredictable and unknown.
We live like we know.
We create a picture of what we know.
We attach to that picture.

Life is free, joyful, expressive.
Live like everyday is a new day. Every person we know is new to us.
Know the essence of what you want and seek out that essence.
Hold your vision and begin to notice life's miracles and surprises!
