Putting Joy in the Driver's Seat
The New Year can often bring a sense of new beginnings, a clean slate and the opportunity to change, create and pursue our desires. Some of us take the time to set goals for our work and life or resolutions of what we will finally do or stop doing. And, some of us even take the time to stop and reflect on what went well, what didn’t go so well and what we have learned.
While all of those activities are valuable, what we don’t often identify is what will ultimately drive our year. What criteria will ultimately guide our actions? Especially when our demands increase, we get pulled in many directions and our life gets out of balance. It is often during the challenging times that all of the strategies we learned to manage priorities and manage our time go out the window. It is at these times that we need something to drive us and get us back on track quickly.
Can you imagine if you used “joy” as your driver to choose the activities you do, the people you see and the work you conduct? In other words, you only choose activities that bring you joy; you only surround yourself with people who bring you joy; you only do work you enjoy and work with people you enjoy. What a concept, huh? Well, this year, I am taking on the experiment of using “joy” as my driver and I invite you to join me.
Some of you may be thinking, “Well, that’s all fine and dandy for you, but my life is much more complicated and I have many obligations that I don’t always have a choice in what I do and who I spend my time with.” Everyone is in their own unique situation and although the concept sounds simple, it is not always easy. Driving your life from a place of joy however is absolutely possible one step at a time.
Shifting behaviors and actions in your life is like building a muscle. In the beginning, it can feel sore and painful but as you work it out a bit more, you feel stronger. With that strength comes the confidence in your ability to handle anything that comes your way. Take the opportunity this New Year to use joy as your driver, even if you practice it just once a week. When you feel stuck, unmotivated or unclear, ask yourself, “What will bring me the most joy in this moment?” and follow your answer.
When you follow what brings you joy, you always attract more joy and life will inevitably feel lighter, easier and more fulfilling. Wishing you a joyful and prosperous 2008!
Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna
Monthly Workout: Putting Joy in the Driver's Seat
Take on the following questions and process below for this month’s workout:
- What brings you the most joy? How often are you doing those activities today?
- Who do you most enjoy being with? How often do you spend time with those individuals/groups?
- On a scale of 1-10, how much do you enjoy your work?
- Based on your answers above, choose one area in your life you would like to have more joy in and make a commitment to let joy be your driver. What is one action you are willing to take on to bring more joy into that area of your life? Take on that action and see what shifts for you.
- If you are ready to take on a greater challenge, ask yourself every morning, “What will bring me the most joy today?” Then, follow through with your answer. It may mean having to say no to something else. Notice what shifts for you.
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)
Putting Joy in the Driver's Seat
Living a life of joy really does take something.
It’s not for the faint of heart.
It requires a strong commitment and desire,
to experience joy and not just play the part.
Make the commitment this year, to live from your heart.
Follow your bliss, and begin to start.
For every step you take will be easier than the last,
and you will soon begin to experience your life as a blast!
