Making a Difference
In the world right now, it seems rare to hear good news on television or in the newspaper.  We focus so much on what we are doing wrong in our society, in our environment and to each other.  And, granted, there is a whole lot of negativity happening in the world that I don't even choose to think about because it would drain all of my energy.  But, the impact we have as human beings to make a difference is profound.

As a Professional Coach, I am blessed everyday with the opportunity to impact another human being.  Whether it is helping them land a new career more aligned with who they are, resolving conflict between two Executives or working with Entrepreneurs to get their message out into the world.  To know that I have made a difference in another is one of the best feelings I could ever experience.  To know that you have made another happier because of who you are is the best acknowledgement you could receive.

Each day, you have the opportunity to make a difference in whatever you do, whoever you are and who you are with.  However, we are often driven by deadlines, recognition and power such that we miss out on those opportunities, big or small.  What kind of mark do you want to leave on this world?  What kind of difference do you want to make with others?  I'm not referring to what you want to accomplish or achieve.  I am referring to who you are in the world and who you want to be.  When you think of someone that has made a difference for you, most likely, you recall how they were with you and how they made you feel, not necessarily what they did.  As human beings, we crave to be seen and heard.  When another truly sees who we are and helps us to be more fulfilled, they have made a difference.

So, I ask you, in your busy day at work or at home whether you are with colleagues, family members, working out of your home, or enjoying a bike ride in the afternoon, take a moment and check in with what you are doing and who you are with.  See if there is just one small thing you could do or be for another that could make them breathe a bit easier.  Be it a smile, a small deed or acknowledgment, offering your time or assistance or just an ear to listen.  Your contribution, however big or small, will bring you more joy than you ever imagined.  You will have made a profound difference for another.

Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna

Monthly Workout: Making a Difference
Take on the following questions and process:

  1. When you think of someone who has made a difference in your life, what stands out the most about them? Who were they being with you?
  2. As you think of those qualities, begin to look at yourself and notice how often you possess those qualities. What would it take to make a difference for someone else?
  3. Pick one quality that stands out and practice that quality for the next week...at work, at home, when you are out and about.
  4. Notice who you attract, how you feel and what difference you make for others as you practice that quality. Think of this like a game or experiment and play with it. This doesn't have to be heavy or serious at all!
  5. Think of one or two people in your life who have made a difference for you and take a moment to acknowledge them, either via a letter, over the phone or in person. Acknowledgements are what makes the world go 'round, so it does not matter in what form you deliver it. What matters are the words you express with your hearltfelt thanks!
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)

Poem of the Month: A Quote by Emerson

In honor of Emerson, I am sharing one of my most favorite quotes of his about Success. This is what I think of when making a difference.

"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.  This is to have succeeded!" ~ Emerson
