Finding Happiness - Is it Truly Possible?
As human beings, our true goal and desire in life is to find fulfillment, to be “happy”. It’s the one thing every parent wants for their child and as adults, it’s the thing we continue to strive for. But, what really is happiness? "When I get a job that I truly love, then I’ll be happy. When I can afford the house I really want, then I’ll be happy. I’ll be really happy when I find my life’s partner, or discover my life’s purpose." Sound familiar? Our happiness is based on conditions. When I (have, do, am) X, well, then I’ll be happy! These conditions limit and constrain us and place so much undue pressure that in the end, they cause us more pain than joy. Even after we’ve met those goals, we wonder why we still feel unfulfilled.
We were brought up believing in the “American Dream” and when we achieve it, we will be happy. Unfortunately, we treat happiness like a “to-do”, something we have to achieve. What if happiness was available to us whenever we wanted? Happiness is truly a state of being, a state of mind, not a place to get to. But, how do we become happy? First off, we have to identify that we are not our home, we are not the car we drive, the career we have, the relationship we are in, or the role or title we hold at work. It is so easy to define ourselves by what we possess or achieve, rather than who we are.
Finding happiness is about taking the time to find out who you truly are at your core, and identifying what is important to you. And, then, most of all, living your life by those values. It’s about standing for what you believe in and holding strong to that. It’s about seeing the beauty in the smallest flower bud and the largest forest of trees. It’s about awareness of what is around you. It’s about coming alive to life! And, it’s available to you in every moment, if you choose to see it. But, we are so mired in everything we need to get done, that we forget to BE.
I ask you this month to connect more with who you are rather than what you want and in doing so, more of life will be available to you that you never new existed. Choose to BE happy first, because from that state of being, you will attract all that you desire and achieve all that you want.
Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna
Monthly Workout: Finding Happiness
Explore the following process and questions below for this month's workout:
- What words best describe who you are? What do people most admire you for?
- What are some of your core beliefs and values that define who you are?
- How do you define happiness? Are there conditions that must exist? If so, what is the cost of living by those conditions?
- What would be possible if you could BE happy right here, right now? What would it take to live by your values and core beliefs right now and not waver?
- Notice more around you. Look for the beauty in life. Appreciate who you are live by your values and beliefs. As you begin to do that, notice your level of happiness.
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)
Poem of the Month: Happiness
Anything is possible, when you open your mind.
But, true happiness, comes from opening your heart.
Being and doing are two different beasts.
One is centered, the other feasts.
Be who you truly are.
Stand for what feels right,
For when you live your values, your fulfillment will take flight.
