It’s great to be back in the country after an extended trip overseas. Being away really had me reconnect with how grateful I am of the many things in my life. I thought this month’s workout would be centered around “Gratitude” and taking a step back in order to see what is right in front of us.
I hope you enjoy the "Monthly Workout"!

Stepping Away to See What is so Close I have just returned from being in Europe for three weeks and there is something about the experience of travel that is like no other. Traveling always reconnects me to my core and reminds me of what is important to me, how far I’ve come and the many people and things in my life I am so grateful for.
It’s almost like I have to go far away to really notice what I have back here at home. Isn’t that typical that we often don’t see what is right before our eyes until we move away from it. It’s like the Monet that when viewed too close has no definition. It is only when we step away from it that we see the magnificent painting before us.
When was the last time you stepped away from your life and really took a look at what you have, who you have become and what you are grateful for?
Stepping away from my life being in Italy to experience the Italians’ love of life, relaxed pace and appreciation for food, wine and conversation, breathed new life into my own view of work, play and relationships. Traveling through the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary reminded me of the simple things in life like sitting with friends over a tall glass of beer. I visited the town in Slovakia my mother’s mother grew up in and it opened up my eyes to the other half of my heritage. I can really feel it in my bones that I am not just Italian, but I am half Eastern European as well.
Having to travel light through Eastern Europe reminded me of how little I really need to survive, and how much “stuff” I have and own that I don’t really need. And, most of all I reconnected with how grateful I am for all I have learned and experienced, and grateful for the incredible people who are in my life.
We don’t have to travel far away to see new perspectives in our life or appreciate what we have and where we have come. It could just be during a walk on our lunch break or a Sunday afternoon in the park, a walk along the beach, through the woods, or a visit to the zoo or amusement park.
Take some time out today to reconnect with where you have come and what you are grateful for. It is only when we step away that we appreciate how much we have so close to us.
Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna
Monthly Workout: A Look at Gratitude Take some time out to begin to answer these questions below. Follow the instructions below to help keep your answers alive in your life.
- What are the greatest lessons you have learned over the past year? State them as pieces of advice you might give to a friend.
- What experiences in your life are you most grateful for?
- Who in your life are you most grateful for?
- Take a look around your home and notice what you have. How much of it do you really need? What items are you willing to part with? I challenge you to minimize one area of your home and notice how much you still have to be grateful for.
With the answers above from questions #1-#3, create a collage (words and/or pictures) that represent what you are most grateful for and hang it in a prominent place to remind you everyday of all that you have.
I look forward to hearing what transpires for you! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)
Poem of the Month
As I was going through poems I had written over 5 years ago, I came across "Lessons Learned" and thought it applied so much today as it did back then. I hope you enjoy it!
Lessons Learned
Timing is so important. It is only when one is willing to listen that one is willing to change.
Being is more important than doing.
Relying on others for your own happiness is unhealthy.
You must stop and rest in order to survive.
You must feed the mind, body and soul - the soul keeps you going.
Energy wasted on envy of others is better spent on being who you want to be.
Life is too short to wait for something to happen, especially a new attitude.
Only you have the power to think, act and be different.
Patterns of your past are lessons learned for your future.
Take time to look back in order to move forward.
Who are you? That is what people will always see in the end. That is what you always see from the beginning.
Live your future out of the future, not from the past.
Always know that you don't always have to know.
