The Power of Letting Go
Have you ever experienced focusing on something you wanted so much and then the moment you stop focusing on it, it finally comes to you or something else opens up? Whether it be a problem you are trying to solve, something you are trying to achieve or a situation you would like to change.

Imagine your life is like a river. A river never stops flowing, just as your life continues to ebb and flow. Yet, so often, we interrupt the flow of life without even realizing it. We spend our time and energy “waiting” by the mailbox to see if that acceptance letter came in or by the phone wondering if we got the 2nd interview or if that special person will call. We dream about the house we desire, the car we want, or worry that we won’t find our true love, the job we are meant to have or the financial freedom and good health that we long for. Without even realizing it, all our time is spent on wanting, wishing and worrying. I call these the deadly W’s.

As soon as we focus our thoughts on the deadly W’s, we stop the flow of life. It is our natural state to live a life of ease. When we obsess over wanting something or worrying about not getting it, we are resisting. In other words, when we are not accepting life exactly as it is in the moment, we are resisting. Any resistance to life stops the flow. If you were standing by a river, would you choose to swim upstream? Perhaps if you were a salmon, but we are not! So often, we unconsciously swim upstream making life much more difficult than it is.

Next time you notice your thoughts on wanting, wishing for or worrying, stop and take inventory. Are you fully accepting life as it is exactly in this moment? Are you holding onto something or someone in hopes it will change? How could you let go of having life look a particular way and instead, allow life to flow easily and effortlessly in? When we let go of our attachment to how things should look, we halt all resistance and restore the natural flow. When we let go of people and things that no longer serve us, we begin to attract true abundance into our life. The more you practice letting go, the easier it gets each time. And, the sooner you recognize you are resisting and are able to let go and fully accept in that moment, the sooner you allow ease and joy into your life.

When you get clear on your intentions, align your actions and thoughts with those intentions and let go of the outcome, you will experience ease and joy. Letting go is about accepting the here and now and trusting the natural flow of life...for it doesn’t always look the way we thought it would :-)

Cheers,

Monthly Workout: Letting Go
Pick an area of your life where you feel like you are “holding on” too tight or you are spending much of your waking hours thinking about it, wanting, wishing for or worrying over it. Take on the following process:

  1. How does it feel to hold onto this? To focus your thoughts on wanting, wishing for or worrying? What would it be like if you were able to let go of those feelings?
  2. What do you truly have control over in this area? What is it that YOU can control? What is out of your control?
  3. What is the outcome you would like to have in this area?
  4. What is there to fully accept about this area? What is there to fully accept about yourself?
  5. Are you willing to accept life just the way it is happening? Are you willing to accept yourself just the way you are (and are not)?
  6. What would it take to fully let go of this once and for all? To fully accept yourself and this area without judgment?
  7. If you are willing to practice releasing the thoughts you are holding onto then try the following exercise: image the thoughts and feelings you have about the area or situation. Now imagine those thoughts moving out of the top of your head into the air and disintegrating. Continue to envision all the thoughts moving out of your head and into the air. Begin to replace your thoughts now with this mantra: “I trust that life is unfolding just the way it is supposed to. I accept myself for who I am and I accept others for who they are. We are all doing our best.” Practice that mantra on a daily basis and see what transpires for you.
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)

Poem of the Month: Letting Go

It’s not easy to let go of thoughts you’ve consumed for a long time.
It’s not easy to fully accept life just the way that it is.
It’s not easy to trust that all is well.

But, without giving it a try, you will never know what is possible for you.
Let go of unhealthy thoughts.
Fully accept yourself for all that you are and all that you are not.
Fully accept life for all that it is and is not.
Trust that you will be supported and all will go perfectly.

Letting go can be scary, but staying in the same place is costly, for life is meant to be lived with vigor, enthusiasm and joy for what is, what can be and what will be.
