Seeing Something More
One thing I love about Spring is opening up our family cabin in Southern Vermont. We’ve had it in our family since I was born and it is a place I continue to find peace and solace. I was up a few weekends ago getting some R&R and was walking along Rock River which flows in back of the cabin. It is lined with tons of river rocks and I never get tired of searching for the perfect rock, the one that sticks out and says “ME!” In the past, I was always drawn to heart shaped rocks and seemed I was finding them left and right. I soon created a large collection of heart shaped rocks.

But, this time, as I was looking, I was struck by how different each rock is from each other. Not only in size and color, but texture, shape and design. I began to notice the ones that caught my eye. They were always the ones that were a bit different than the others. It reminded me of myself and my desire to step out of the norm, draw outside the lines and express who I truly am. Then, it occurred to me that these rocks are like people, each one different from the other – in size, shape and color and how we glance over some and look at others and how much we really don’t see. So, I started looking at each rock closely and noticed so much more.

It was like a mini-experiment in opening my eyes wider, looking deeper, and taking the time to really see what is there. Each of us has unique qualities, characteristics, strengths and flaws. But, how often do we really take the time to see what is there in another individual before we make assumptions or jump to conclusions about who they are? How often do we overlook someone or brush them off because of what we see on the outside without really understanding what is on the inside?

This is not an easy task to do. Our days are busy and we don’t seem to have the time, but there is so much richness in what is already in front of us if we open our eyes wider and see a bit deeper. People want to be witnessed by others, acknowledged and appreciated. Whether it is the person you pick up your dry cleaning from, the clerk at the supermarket, the friend you jog with, your neighbor or your significant other, each deserves to be seen.

Take the time out this upcoming month to open your eyes just a bit wider and see more deeply into another, even if just for a moment. You will not only make a difference for them, but you will feel richer for having done so.

Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna

Monthly Workout: Seeing Something More
Take on the following questions and process below for this month’s workout:
  1. Take a few minutes in the morning after you awaken to set an intention for openness and richness throughout your day.
  2. As an experiment, take something in your room that you see quite often. Look at it right now. Pick it up if you can. Look deeper into this object and notice what you see. What are you curious about?
  3. Now, take this same process and apply it to the people you meet throughout your day. They may be individuals you see daily or you may have just met them for the first time.
  4. As you interact with them, begin to witness who they are. Get more curious with your eyes and notice what you see. Stay open and free from judgment. Interact with them as if they offer richness to you.
  5. Notice what you feel and how they may feel around you.
  6. Practice this throughout the day and see if you can make it a natural way of being throughout your life.
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)

Poem of the Month: Seeing Something More

We may look different on the outside,
But on the inside, we desire the same thing.
To be seen without judgment and treated like a queen or king.

We each have the ability to witness another,
By opening our eyes and slowing down the shutter.
Take time in your day to deeply see,
The richness in others, the richness to be.
