The Gift of Time
As we approach this holiday season, thoughts of gift-giving, tree decorating, holiday shopping and festive gatherings come to mind. But, just recently, right in our backyard, was an explosion from a chemical plant in Danvers, MA. Many of you may have seen the details on the news. Over a 100 houses in the area surrounding the plant were destroyed and thankfully, there were no fatalities. I remember something that struck me as they were interviewing a woman whose house was destroyed and she said, “It’s just a home – at least we are all here and we have each other.”
And, it really occurred to me how true that is. In the end, our health and our loved ones are really the most important thing of all. We are not our homes, we are not the car we drive, the money we make or the clothes we wear. What matters most is that we are healthy and grateful to be alive. In the realm of things, their home was “just a home.” Yes, it’s devastating to lose something you may have worked very hard to be able to have and you may have lost lots of memorable items. But, in the end, we are more than all of the material things we have. And, without our health, we wouldn’t have had any of those things.
During this holiday season of gift-giving, instead of spending money on a material item for a loved one, consider giving the gift of time and give them an opportunity to experience life. Get a gift certificate for a massage, yoga classes, a Broadway show, F1 Racing, paint your own pottery, a nice restaurant – something your loved ones can “experience” rather than own. And, perhaps something you can do together!
In the end, it’s the experiences that feed our soul and the time we take in our lives that gives us life. Our material things could disappear in a moment, but no one can take away your own experiences.
Give the gift of time, of health, of joy this season and surprise your loved ones with something special. In the end, you may be pleasantly surprised with how much fun you have in giving and how little stress your holiday shopping becomes!
Cheers,

Monthly Workout: The Gift of Time
As you consider gift-giving this holiday season, for those gifts you haven’t already purchased, think about the person you are giving to and take on the following questions and process below:
- What do they most enjoy doing? Seeing? Experiencing? Consider purchasing a gift certificate for one of those activities, places or experiences. If they don’t have gift certificates, create one yourself and give it to them.
- What do you most enjoy doing together? Draw up a gift certificate for that activity and give it to them. (e.g. This gift certificate entitles you to 3 visits to Starbucks…or 2 walks along the beach…or a dinner and movie of your choice…one day of antique shopping)
- What is important to them about their health and well-being? What do they most need to improve their health? Perhaps you could purchase a massage, pilates class, intro session to ballroom dancing, a month supply of vitamins or supplements, a manicure, pedicure…
- What would most surprise them? What’s the gift they would never consider getting that is not material? See if you can purchase a gift certificate for that or create one yourself.
Have fun with this! Play and be creative! It’s the time you put into this that makes it fun for you too! And, it lessons your stress level than going to a mall, finding a parking space and walking into 1000’s of other crazy shoppers!
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)
Poem of the Month: The Gift of Time
So often, we forget what is truly important.
We get caught in the craziness of everyday life.
Holidays can become stressful and tough on the soul,
But, when we think of our loved ones, we forget all the strife.
This season, take the time to seek something special.
To give to those near and dear.
Instead of an item, some clothes or a box of candy,
Give them an experience they will hold in their hearts year and after year.
