It is that time of year where the air is brisk and the holiday season is near. It can be a time of excitement and joy and also a time of anxiety. This month, I share with you the theme of "Embracing What is", in hopes of fully experiencing whatever is there for you.
I hope you enjoy the "Monthly Workout"!

Embracing What Is I just got back from a conference in Denver and, in the back of my mind, I kept thinking "I've got to write my newsletter". When I thought about it, nothing seemed to flow. Weeks ago, I had come up with the theme "Embracing what is", but every time I went back to that theme, I felt stuck. Instead of hanging out in the experience of being stuck, I kept trying to forge forward. I would ask all the questions that used to get my juices flowing, but I remained stuck. Then, it hit me! I couldn't even be with the very theme I wanted to write about - embracing what is! I couldn't even sit with "I'm stuck", "nothing is flowing". I couldn't be exactly where I was. Then, I knew, I had to write about it!
I started laughing as I saw the irony in it. The truth is, my writing is always for me. I write about what I most need to hear in that moment or time in my life. And sometimes, things don't flow. They don't go my way. The frustration sets in, or other emotion comes up. And, if it doesn't feel good, I want to move on. How often, when we don't feel or get what we want, do we immediately go into "how do I get out of this" mode?
Everyone has what I call their "resting place". That place that feels comfortable, that feels like YOU. It's the way of being you naturally go back to. My resting place is generally feeling upbeat, being positive, seeing what's possible. It's the place of freedom, play, exploration and laughter. When we are in our resting place, we feel at home. Being outside of our resting place is like being out of our comfort zone. And, it doesn't always feel good. We can feel stuck. Our natural reaction is to immediately look for ways to get out of it.
It wasn't until I acknowledged that I was stuck and really sat in it and gave myself over to it, that I could feel myself starting to move forward. It wasn't until I could embrace where I was that I could begin to move.
To experience what it means to be fully alive is to feel the wide range of emotions from deep sadness to extreme joy, from feeling blocked to feeling free. To experience full aliveness requires the patience and rigor to sit with something long enough for it to pass through you. To not only acknowledge it, but to fully accept and embrace the emotion. How often, when we feel stuck, do we say "Today, I am going to consciously embrace what I'm feeling and where I am." Instead of fighting where we are, and wishing we were elsewhere, what would it be like to experience genuine acceptance? To feel the full expression of human being"ness" in the moment.
How would that be?
Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna
Monthly Workout: Embracing What Is What is your "resting place"? That place you feel YOURSELF. Describe the experience.
Feel free to take on the following exercise whenever you feel you have moved away from your "resting place":
- What do experience when you're out of your resting place or comfort zone?
- If you allowed the experience to pass through you, what is available to you on the other side?
- What would it be like to fully accept and embrace this experience?
Allow yourself to sit with whatever is there and fully experience it. Embrace it fully in whatever way feels appropriate.
If you find yourself impatient, notice what you may have to give up or take on to stay in the present and embrace the experience. Practice letting go or taking on what you noticed and see what that allows.
This is not always easy, so be patient and gentle with yourself and know that each time you practice, it becomes easier to accept and allow.
I look forward to hearing what transpires for you! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)
Poem of the Month: EMBRACING WHAT IS
Our endless range of experiences
Like a box of crayons from our past,
Have many names and colors
The range so very vast.
We pick the colors we desire,
For the picture that we feel.
But how often do we choose a color,
and embrace what's truly real?
Embrace the colors that you choose,
And experience what is there.
For when you dive much deeper,
you'll find the richness extremely rare.
