Change is Good? Ahhh, the wonderful cliché we hear when we are going through change! Sometimes, I just hate hearing those clichés when I’m in the throes of chaos! Deep down inside, I may believe change is good, but while I am in the midst of it, it can feel far from “good”. It can be challenging, draining and feel downright scary! It is in our human nature to crave safety and security. We naturally want to stay in what feels familiar, safe and secure. But, as I recall a wonderful quote I read many years ago, “A boat in harbor is safe. But, that’s not what boats are for.”
As human beings, we are meant to feel ALIVE, and to feel alive is to feel the full spectrum of our experience from sheer joy to deep sadness, from extreme excitement to the scariness of stepping out into the unknown. Believe it or not, when we take a leap into something new, the scariness and anxiety is also a form of aliveness. Often, our automatic reaction is that being scared is “bad”. But, what’s really bad is to fail to acknowledge those feelings as valid, real and ALIVE!
Making a change in any area of our life takes an incredible amount of courage and trust, be it changing a career to explore what you’ve really wanted to do, taking your relationship to the next level or moving from a place you’ve lived for so many years. You may be ready to commit to your health and well-being, or have to face the unexpected challenge of having to care for your aging parents, or support a dear friend or family member who is going through cancer.
Whatever change you may be facing, know that you have the capacity to choose how you relate to it. You may not have control over what changes around you, but you can control how you perceive it and respond to it. We can fight it to the near end, consuming and draining lots of our precious energy, or we can embrace and welcome change and acknowledge it as part of the life cycle of being alive.
As the leaves change in color and gently fall to the ground, so must we naturally grow and change to have and be and do what brings us true fulfillment. The leaf does not fight to stay green, or hold onto that branch for dear life. The leaf knows when it’s time to change color and acknowledges that when it falls, it allows for a new bud to form, a new life to create, and so it gently falls to the ground.
Notice how you relate to change in your life. Is it a struggle, a fight? Or do you embrace it? Are you holding onto that branch for dear life or letting go to gently land in a new place? Change is not easy, nor pleasant at times, but it can be exhilarating and freeing when we shift our perspective on it. Maybe change CAN be good?!
Cheers,

Monthly Workout: Embracing Change Pick an area or situation in your life where you are currently facing change or would like to see change in. Take a moment to explore the following questions:
- What do you currently experience in this area as you are facing or desiring change? How would you describe your current perspective on this?
- Does this perspective drain you or exhilarate you? If it exhilarates you, great! If not, continue with the workout.
- What are you holding onto tightly or want so badly? What would it be like to let go of the attachment to that result?
- What is the gift in this experience for you?
- How could you acknowledge the gift and embrace this time of change for you?
- What is one thing you would need to let go or take on to acknowledge and embrace this change? Are you willing to let it go or take it on?
- If so, what’s a new perspective you will take on around this change for you?
Remember, taking on a new perspective takes rigor and a high level of awareness as our minds will naturally want to go back to the old perspectives in times of challenge.
Create a structure for you that will keep this new perspective alive. You may write it on post-its and place in your home and office as a reminder. Or, ask the support of others when they notice you in your old perspective. Create a structure that fits and works with you and most importantly, be gentle with yourself!
I look forward to hearing what transpires for you! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)
Poem of the Month: EMBRACING CHANGE
When we embrace a friend, their eyes light up.
They feel warm inside, safe and secure.
When we embrace change, our life lights up.
We feel alive and exhilarated though sometimes unsure.
Change is not always easy nor is it always fun,
But it can be if we simply stop fighting and acknowledge we’ve already won.
It does not have to be a struggle, or a challenge to overcome.
Change could be, instead, the will to become.
