Greetings! October 2004

First off, CONGRATULATIONS RED SOX for an extraordinary performance!! I just couldn't let that pass living in the bean town :-) Now, back to this month's workout...with Fall in bloom and the beautiful turning of the leaves, it just points to the fact that so much of what happens in nature "just happens" naturally. This month's workout is about natural growth and exploring what it is to naturally grow.

What is it to Naturally Grow?
There's nothing like being in nature. And, especially during the Fall, feeling the crisp clean air and hearing the crunching of the leaves below my feet. As I was walking on a secluded dirt road near our Vermont family cabin weekends ago, I was amazed by the nature surrounding me. What amazed me most were that all the trees and the moss and grass in front of me grew just perfectly on their own. There is nothing a tree needs to grow but what nature gives it: water, air and the sun.

I heard the rushing river below and the sound of birds chirping about. The sun was beaming through the trees and the sky was a perfect blue with not one cloud in site. And this, my friend, is natural beauty! No added preservatives, no added color, no artificial ingredients and no msg! There's something to be said about natural growth.

Have we moved so far from nature that everything we eat comes in a box or a bag? Everything we do requires an SUV with built in DVD and no one goes anywhere without a cell phone attached to their ear? And yet, available to us every single day is natural beauty that, when we stop and notice, can rejuvenate us, bring us clarity and restore us to a sense of peace.

I had tried so many times to get in my car and go downtown to shop and I was extremely excited to see an art exhibit of Andy Warhol (can you believe, in this little town in Vermont) but, as soon as I brought my beach chair down to the Rock River and basked in the sun, my body just wanted more and more.

How often do you get the opportunity to sit by a rushing river in the sun on a beautiful Fall day? How often do you take the time out of your busy schedule, to appreciate nature and what it has to offer. You don't have to be a "crunchy granola" type to appreciate nature. It could simply be about taking a walk at lunchtime or taking a short drive to explore a new area for the sheer purpose of discovery and appreciation.

Then, i thought, what would it be like for us, as human beings, to naturally grow, to naturally go with the flow of life. To appreciate the failures as much as we revel in our successes. To not force to happen, but to practice patience and trust that we have everything we need to survive, grow and prosper.

It's not about the toys we own, the clothes we wear, the car we drive, the home we own. We are not our jobs, we are not our cars, we are not our home. None of those things define us. And, none help us grow naturally. They may make us feel good on the outside, but the real test is to see how happy we could be with none of that around us. That is true happiness from the inside out. True happiness comes from within. True growth comes from within.

I ask you this Fall to stop, take a moment, an hour, an afternoon, a weekend to just "be" with what surrounds us every single day, the natural beauty of the outdoors. I guarantee when you breathe that in, you breathe new life into your soul. You will naturally feel good!

Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna

Monthly Workout: A Look at Natural Growth:
Explore the following questions below for this month's workout:
  1. What is it to naturally grow?
  2. When was the last time you stopped to appreciate what nature has to show you?
  3. If it's been a while, make a commitment to do one thing a week that connects you with your surroundings. Spend a day away to explore a new area. Notice how you feel afterwards and see how you can keep that feeling alive for the rest of the week.
  4. Take a look at an area of your life you feel you are "forcing" to make happen. Explore what it would take to let go of being attached to the outcome. Ease up on the force and instead, allow, ask for help and let it be. Notice what happens. Notice how you feel.
I look forward to hearing what you experience! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)

Poem of the Month: Natural Growth

So much natural beauty surrounds us,
yet it goes unrecognized.
We go from meeting to meeting, task to task,
and everything has become "supersized".

Nature alone has so much to teach us,
when we stop to appreciate and let go of the fuss.
When we open our eyes and take it all in,
we naturally grow, it comes from within.

There is something to be said about natural growth.
It cannot go too fast and never be too slow.
For it is directed by nature so much beyond us in size,
If you think you can control it, you're in for a surpise!
