| Greetings! |
September 2003 |
Hoping you are savoring the last part of the summer! I still believe there is some warm weather ahead of us!! After taking a break myself and doing my best to stay out of my own head, I am hoping this month's workout will provide a new way to get out of our "head" and into our heart.
I hope you enjoy the "Monthly Workout"!

The Mind is a Dangerous Place to Live How many times have you talked yourself out of something only to find out later, your original hunch or feeling about it was absolutely right? Or, you “racked your brain” over something for so long that your head “ached”? We all have these voices in our head like commentaries telling us what we did wrong, or what we should of or could have done. If you’re wondering “what voice?”, that’s the one I am referring to :-). It can often stop us from having and doing what we want and from being who we truly want to be.
How often do you obsess about something thinking you should have done it differently, better or not done it at all? “I knew I should have declined that invitation when I got it. The evening was horrible.” What about those decisions you made that you played through your head so often trying to figure out which choice was the “best” choice, agonizing over what direction to take. “I had a feeling that job was not a fit after all, but I took it anyways”. When we dwell in our mind too long, it can be mentally exhausting, draining our energy and seeping our aliveness. The mind can surely be a dangerous place to live!
We are all blessed with a beautiful mind, heart and for those who believe, a soul. Yet, how often do we take the opportunity to listen to our heart and soul when our thoughts are going a mile a minute? I continue to be amazed by the capacity of the human body and the amount of knowledge that lies within us. So many of our answers are right there ready for the taking. But, where do the soulful answers come from and how do we access them?
To get at the core of who we are and what we want, we have to quiet the chatter in our mind and listen to what is in our heart. Our heart is the key to our answers, that place of “knowing” that is pure, non-judgmental and always right. Your heart always knows what is best for you.
Imagine what it would be like to lead with your heart and use your mind to help manage the details. Imagine how powerful that would be. How different might your decisions look? What directions might you otherwise take if your heart were in charge?
Your heart has been craving to get a word in edgewise. Take this time to hear what it has to say.
Cheers,
Jean M. DiGiovanna
Monthly Workout: Listening to your heart You may use this exercise below at any point in time, but I will outline it in the context of helping to deal with a challenge/issue/decision you are facing. Feel free to use it as you see fit. Take a decision, challenge or issue you are currently struggling with and try out the following process:
- Take 3 deep breaths in and out and as you release, let out all the stress, worries, or any thoughts currently in your head. As you come up with thoughts, imagine a leaf floating by and place your thought on the leaf and watch if float away.
- Now, rub your hands together to generate heat and place your hands on your heart and allow your heart to absorb the heat. Put your focus on your heart, and visualize a circle of green light spinning clockwise in that area. This helps open up your heart.
- As you continue to focus on your heart, imagine your could speak. What would it say to you right now regarding this issue? Allow for your heart to answer.
- What does your heart need right now? What does it want?
Capture your answers and most of all, trust that your answers are right. My challenge to you is to follow the answers that your heart gives you and do not question them.
Continue to stay open and allow your heart to reveal the answers!!
I look forward to hearing what transpires for you! (please e-mail me at jdigi@thinkpeople.com)
Poem of the Month: YOUR HEART KNOWS
Opening your heart and listening to what it has to say
takes courage and trust, not something we may naturally do everyday.
But, when we quiet our mind and open our heart,
the answers will reveal themselves in every way.
There is so much wisdom available to us,
when we stop the thinking and finally trust.
It’s the letting go of having to do it “right”,
that we finally free ourselves of having to fight.
Give your mind a rest and let your heart take over.
You may be pleasantly surprised by what you discover!
